What is a Pallet Racking System?

Being in the distribution or warehousing industry means moving and storing a lot of products. Yet depending on your SKU, specific storage solutions are better than others when it comes to effectively managing your inventory.

Having a pallet racking system in place is one of those ways that can help with maximizing the warehousing space while still allowing for rapid and straightforward access to any of the goods.

What is pallet racking?

Pallet racking is a way to maximize the space in a warehouse by stacking goods vertically. These goods are usually on their own pallets and are stacked within metal frames that separate the different pallets, similar to stories in a home.

Racking is very different from shelving in that it requires forklifts to access the pallets directly and the goods held on top of the pallets. They can be built to be very safe as well as to automate specific components of the warehouse.

Understanding the basic components of Pallet Racking

Pallet racking is built to ensure maximum storage usage while at the same time ensuring the structural integrity is solid. It consists of upright frames or end frames that are built vertically.

Each level is separated by a horizontally placed cross beam that’s heavy-duty metal to be able to handle the weight comfortably. Then pallets are stacked on the ground and on each crossbeam, all the way up to the ceiling.

Forklifts can then come in and grab the pallets that are needed and send them directly to the waiting delivery trucks. There are also options to automate and eliminate the need for forklifts.

Pallet Racking Accessories

To help round out the robustness of your pallet racking system, you can include numerous ancillary products during installation. When it comes to additional protection of the goods you’re storing and distributing, getting both vertical and horizontal braces will help ensure stability, and everything will hold firm when using forklifts.

To improve the safety of everyone in the area, you can install wire decking or timber decking to help prevent injuries, as well as post protectors and safety panels. In addition, you can add on additional load-bearing components for especially heavy inventory or MDF decking for extra stability and support.
