Get ready as new law paves the way for greater supermarket competition across New Zealand

The duopoly that has been in play with supermarkets in New Zealand for quite some time now has come to an end. Legislation has come to pass that allows for NZ supermarket competition to exist and thrive.

What has changed

To support NZ supermarket competition, which is also a way to help stave off the ever-growing inflation that’s happening in New Zealand at the moment, there are a few things that are happening. First, many of the major supermarkets will be putting clear pricing on their products, specifically when it comes to the price per weight. This helps consumers understand exactly if they’re getting a good price or not.

Then there’s been a move in regards to leases and supermarkets that have hampered other local retailers due to getting preferential treatment when it comes to getting those choice land areas. All existing and prior covenants are no longer valid or enforceable.

Yet the biggest new rule and push is that supermarkets need to give other retailers access to the wholesale business. This is to directly affect the pricing and markets that supermarkets have been in control of for much too long. It will now open up everyone, from new supermarkets to those trying to sell in the larger chains, offering much-needed transparency and the opportunity to be competitive with their products.

The two major grocery chains are already well underway to offer up the right platform to give the access necessary for a proper wholesale business. The two supermarkets in question are Foodstuffs and Countdown. Both are welcoming this opportunity and are embracing NZ supermarket competition.
